I
believe that we live a period of time that is unique in history, where words
now have to be carefully explained and defined; for if they are not a person
can be easily misunderstood and miss-interpreted; Communication is an all too
often overlooked tool that can either lead to much confusion or forge a clear
plan for success; the bible is no different. Many people think they know what
Jesus meant when He used terms like believe and hope; but they really don’t and
it is evident with the amount of false converts roaming the earth. Jesus was
well aware that there would be this problem, and therefore he used strong
language in order that there would be no misunderstanding of Him. The confusion
today is mainly caused by the messengers who are preaching a watered down
gospel. Jesus on the other hand is a master with words, symbols, parables and
the like; He spoke in a way that would offend most while being attractive to a
select few. And so the title of tonight’s message is:

19 Therefore
there was a division again among the Jews because of these sayings.
there was a division again among the Jews because of these sayings.
There are two
words that jump out at me when reading this verse the first is the word therefore; the second is the word division. And so let us first look at the word
therefore; when seeing this word one ought to always ask themselves what is it
there for; it is a word that is intended to take listeners and readers back in
time; it is a sign that points in the opposite direction. And so what is Jesus
trying to point us back to, well this very same verse tells us, it is not
because of what Jesus did, but rather verse 19 says ,
because of these sayings; and so it has to do with what He has been
saying rather than what He has been doing. And so knowing that we can dismiss
the healing of the blind man on the Sabbath day in chapter 9 of John’s gospel; but
it does take us to John 9:35 where our Lord the good shepherd seeks and
finds His one lone sheep, the formerly blind man who had been cast out by the
false shepherds earlier. In John 9:40 there it says,
then some of the Pharisees who were with Him (heard these words) and
said to Him, are we blind also? And so now we know that the starting
point of the sayings which caused division can be found in John 9:35. And so we
will work our way forward from there to John 10:19.

And so john 9:35
says,
Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and when He had found him, He said to
him, "Do you believe in the Son of God?"
says,
Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and when He had found him, He said to
him, "Do you believe in the Son of God?"
Here we have a
beautiful and accurate look at the character of our Lord, either someone came
and told Jesus about of the plight of the man, who had been born blind, or
Jesus Himself went looking for Him; but no matter either way our divine
shepherd went seeking to save this one which was lost; He went on a mission to
receive this one which was rejected by the religious community. He asks the man
do you believe in the son of God. That single seemingly innocent question would
be the beginning of the sayings of Christ which would bring about the division
we see in John 10:19. There is no single more important question one human
being can ask another than do you believe in the son of God? And how a person
answers the question is of equal importance. And so people are naturally
divided, some even refuse to answer the question. But Jesus says that you are
either for Him or against Him, everyone must take a side, either you believe in
the son of God or you don’t.

In 9:36 the man
born blind answered Jesus’ all important question by asking a question of his own;
in John 9:36 ; He answered and said,
"Who
is He, Lord, that I may believe in Him?"

As admirable as
this man’s response was, it was wrong headed and presumptuous, he presumed that
if someone just pointed out to him who the son of God was then he would
believe. I am sure after being healed of his blindness this man was ripe and
ready to believe just about anything. But that is not how genuine faith works.
The demons of hell know who Christ is and yet they do not believe in Him. In Mark 1:24 one of the demons when speaking to Jesus said, I
know who you are-the Holy One of God. In Matthew 1:28 another group of demons cried out saying, what
business do we have with each other, Son of God? in Mark 1:34 there it says that Jesus healed
many who were ill with various diseases, and He cast out many demons; and He
was not permitting them to speak, because they knew who He was. In Mark 5:12 there the demons cried out and called Jesus the
Son of the Most High God. In Luke 4:41 there the demons also called Jesus the
Son of God.

And so although
believing in Jesus Christ as the Son of God is the greatest single act that
anyone can perform; equally important is how one believes. To believe is
not to merely accept that Christ walked the earth or even to accept the title
of Son of God which is applied to Him. After all someone may accept the fact
that a certain person is the president of the united states without believing
in them. One may accept the fact that the devil exists without believing in
Him. And so when Jesus asked the man born blind if He believed in the Son of
God, He was asking him do you entrust your soul to Christ. To believe in the
Son of God is to deny self while exalting God; it is to put the well-being of
His kingdom before your own personal agenda, goals or aspirations it is to
change one’s mind on how they view truth in perspective to how Christ has
revealed it. Believing is a radical change of thinking in the one who has
received genuine faith. They no longer have the mind of a mere man, but that of
Christ. It is a full headlong, both feet in commitment to the Lord Jesus
Christ. There is no turning back, no waffling, wavering and no halting between
two opinions. There are not two ways, your way and His way, no either you are
Lord of your own life or He is the Lord of your life, but it can’t be both.

And so merely
being pointed in the direction of Christ while it is a start, it is not coming
all the way to faith in Christ. And so
the division is made even wider by Christ as He not only requires belief in
Himself but also disrupts man’s idea of what God means when He speaks of belief.
And so the man born blind says, who
is He, Lord that I may believe in Him?

In John 9:37 Jesus said to
him, "You have both seen Him and it is He who is talking with you."

Make no mistake
about it this is the most divisive and disruptive statement ever proclaimed
upon the earth; this is a deal breaker, this single statement can turn friends
into enemies; it is a game changer, it can make a man jobless, homeless and
alone. To say that Jesus is God will remove you from just about any inner
circle, it will get you removed from most contact lists, and it will get you
disinvited to many an engagement. If you are looking to be a person of
controversial character then just mention that Jesus is God; you will be
treated like a leper; a matter of fact you will be treated like the man born
blind, they will cast you out. Do you want to get someone to stop talking to
you, just tell them that Jesus is God. And so Jesus says I am God, you have
seen Me, and now you hear Me. (Do you believe in God) and (I am God); these two
statements were the first two sayings which caused the division among the Jews

There is no
greater battle than the battle for the identity of the Lord Jesus Christ, oh
some might say that they believe that Jesus is the Son of God, but when one
takes a closer look, they will find out that like with the word believe many
have their own ideas of what the title Son of God means.

The Jehovah witnesses for example believe that
Jesus Christ was a perfect man, and that He is a person distinct from God the
Father. However, they also teach that before His earthly life, Jesus was a
spirit creature, Michael the archangel, who was created by God and became the
Messiah at His baptism. According to Jehovah’s Witnesses, Jesus is a mighty
one, although not almighty as Jehovah God is. According to John 1:1 in their
Bible, The New World Translation, Christ is “a god,” but not “the God.” They
teach that Jesus “was and is and always will be beneath Jehovah” and that
“Christ and God are not coequal”. http://www.christiananswers.net/q-eden/edn-r005.html

Another example
is The
Mormon Church which views Jesus and Satan as spirit brothers and sons of God.
God put forth His plan of salvation for the world, and Satan proposed his own
plan. Jesus accepted the Father's plan and offered to implement it as the
Savior. The Father chose Jesus, and the spirit of Jesus was given a body
through the virgin Mary. He was crucified on a Roman cross, and rose from the
dead three days later to establish His deity. The character and life of Jesus
is attainable by anyone who performs at such a righteous level. http://www.allaboutcults.org/what-do-mormons-believe.htm

And so one might
ask why so many religions, why so many differing ideas as to the identity of
Christ; the answer: because this is the ground from which Satan has chosen to
wage war on God. All false religion, all beliefs outside of the Holy scripture
find their beginnings in the pits of hell; don’t get me wrong I am not
attacking the people caught up in those satanic snares, but I make no apology
for attacking every system of belief that rises up rearing its ugly head in
opposition of our God; for we are called to both proclaim and protect the
gospel which has been delivered to us.

And so there is
no belief that the devil himself more fiercely attacks than that of the true
identity of the Lord Jesus Christ; so much so that he attempted to get Jesus
Himself to doubt His own identity. I would not have you take my word for it, so
turn in your bibles back to:

(NKJV)
1 Then Jesus was
led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.
led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.
2 And when He had
fasted forty days and forty nights, afterward He was hungry.

3 Now when the
tempter came to Him, he said, "If You are the Son of God, command that
these stones become bread."

4 But He answered
and said, "It is written, 'Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every
word that proceeds from the mouth of God.' "
and said, "It is written, 'Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every
word that proceeds from the mouth of God.' "
5 Then the devil
took Him up into the holy city, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple,
took Him up into the holy city, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple,
6 and said to
Him, "If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is written:
'He shall give His angels charge over you,' and, 'In their hands they shall
bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone.' "

7 Jesus said to

8 Again, the
devil took Him up on an exceedingly high mountain, and showed Him all the

9 And he said to

11 Then the devil

Now who can tell
me? What was the first temptation that the devil placed in front of Christ? it
was not lust, not pride nor the bowing down to an idol; no it is more subtle
than that; the tempter in verse three and in verse six chose to attack the very
identity of Christ; he said if you are the Son of God, there you have it, the
manifestation of evil attempting to get the manifestation of God to doubt who
He is. The devil continues to work the same way today, for he knows that it is
the key that opens up hell for the entrance of the human heart. But not only is
the unbeliever in danger; beware believer, because the devil will attempt to
get you to doubt your own identity in Christ that he may limit your influence
as a Christian in the world. I believe the best way to thwart this arrow of
wickedness which the evil one slings towards the saints of God is not by
remembering who you are in Christ, but rather by remembering who Christ is in
you. The answer is never looking to self it is always gazing upon the Son of
God; to quote john the Baptist we must decrease that He may increase. And so as
believers we must always be ready to contend and defend both the identity and
character of the Lord Jesus Christ; not that God needs our defense of Himself,
but for the simple reason that the world needs to hear the truth as to who God
is; it is every Christians duty to proclaim truth whether it be in the church,
public square or the market place.

And so let us
return to john 9:35 where Jesus found the formerly blind man that He Himself
had healed. And just to remind you, we are looking at the sayings of Jesus
which caused division among the Jews in john 10:19; and so first in chapter
nine and verse 35 Jesus said, do you believe in the Son of God and second in
verse 37 He declared Himself to be God.

And so let us
move onto the next divisive saying of our Lord and it is found in verse 39
where He says, "For
judgment I have come into this world, that those who do not see may see, and
that those who see may be made blind."
move onto the next divisive saying of our Lord and it is found in verse 39
where He says, "For
judgment I have come into this world, that those who do not see may see, and
that those who see may be made blind."
There are two
divisive, offending and contentious words in this verse; do you know what they
are? They are like the book end of a shelf. Jesus says for judgment, that is
the first judgment; for the unbeliever there is judgment unto eternal
damnation, for the believer there is no condemnation because of their faith in
Christ Jesus; and so you bet they were divided and rightly so, for even Christ
Himself shall separate the sheep from the goats, the chaff from the wheat and
the self-righteous from those with a foreign righteousness that is not their
own, but that which they have inherited from Christ Jesus our Lord! Judgment
that is the first word, the second is found at the end of verse 39, and it is
the word blind. That is how everyone for the exception of Christ comes into
this world, spiritually blind sheep; that is the condition of every human
regardless of their education, background or status in life. Now that is quite
offensive and divisive and yet it is true. When faced with this fact natural
man will grow angry, but the man of God will rejoice for his focus is on the
one who has shown mercy in giving him spiritual vision. Notice the difference
between the religious leaders and the man who had been born blind, that is you
division and they could not be more different. One was filled with pride while
the other was soaked by humility; one was quick to believe just about anything
while the other was ready to reject everything despite even overwhelming
evidence; one spoke with patience and kindness, while the other interrogated
with anger and hostility of heart. And so we must ask ourselves what causes
such a division, there is only one answer and that answer is one word, and that
word grace. Jesus had poured out grace upon the blind man, not only had the
Lord touched this man’s eyes, but He had also reached in and touched his heart;
the man born blind had more than just his eyes anointed, he like us who know
Christ was anointed by grace, the undeserved favor of an all merciful and
mighty to save God; sadly it was not so for the religious leaders, for them
they remained in their natural human condition, unregenerate, dead in
trespasses and sins and so they remain spiritually blind as verse 41 testifies
to. The difference between heaven and hell, the difference between saved and
lost, the difference between belief and unbelief and the difference between
judgment and forgiveness is quite simply the distribution of God’s grace in
Christ Jesus.

Also in verse 41
we find another saying of Christ’s which causes the division found in verse 19
of chapter 10. And so Christ says here in John 9:41 “If
you were blind, you would have no sin; but now you say, 'We see.' Therefore
your sin remains.

If the Pharisees
were not convicted of sin, if they were unaware of their imperfections and
inadequacies towards God then they would not be held accountable by God, but
the problem was, like all men they were very aware of their coming short of the
glory of God; notice that they were claiming to see spiritually speaking. They
said we see, they were claiming that they did not need Christ to enter the
kingdom, that they were able to remedy their own short comings through
following the law. And of course they were not, no man is; and so Christ tells
them that their sin remains. They had pride in their hearts when what they
needed was Christ in their hearts. Such is the condition of every man, woman
and child, they are covered in pride, and unless Christ does for them what He
did for the man born blind they will remain dead in the pride of their sin. And
so it is not good enough that you like these Pharisees say that you see; you
must be made to not only see your sin, but be given the power to turn from your
sin. That which Christ accomplishes deep within the human heart the law cannot
do. The law is only a mirror unto the soul, it cannot wash it, the law is meant
to push sinners towards Christ, crying out for His mercy, in which He washes
you clean with the anointing of grace.

Now let us
continue on to john chapter 10 and verse 1 where we will see another saying
which caused the division among the Jews in verse 19 of this same chapter. And
so in verse 1 Jesus says, "Most
assuredly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door, but
climbs up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber.

Many people
believe that there are numerous ways to be counted among God’s family; they
believe there are many differing religions with different approaches to
salvation which God will certainly accept. But make no mistake about it, Jesus
here squashes and conquers such a notion. He says that these people who promote
such a belief are thieves and robbers. Now if a thief was attempting to climb over your fence how would you treat
them, and I tell you the truth, God will not be so gracious a host as you. He
will grab that one in the midst of their climb and cast them out into outer
darkness where there is weeping and gnashing of teeth. Though the Pharisees
cast the blind man from the synagogue, I tell you in like fashion God will cast
those wicked Pharisees out from His presence for all of eternity. There is only
one way into the sheepfold of God and that is by grace through faith in His
appointed shepherd the Lord Jesus Christ; good works will not get you in,
church attendance will not get you in, bible study will not get you in, baptism
will not get you, and I certainly am not capable of granting you access into
the flock of God; it is grace and faith and that not of yourselves for it is
the gift of God and so let there be no boasting on the behalf of man; to God be
the glory! That will certainly cause division, there are those who God has
chosen to show mercy and grace which is followed by faith and then for the
others there is only the justice of God; and yet God has done no wrong. The
sinner gets what they deserve, while the elect get what they don’t deserve.

In verse 7 we
find the next divisive saying of Christ in which He declares to be the door of
the sheep. He didn’t claim to be (a) door of the sheep, but rather (the) door
of the sheep. What a dogmatic, unbending and unwavering statement. He claimed
to be the lone access into acceptance by God; all other religions, all other
religious leaders, and all other philosophies are but false doors, they are
trap doors which lead straight to the fiery dungeons of hell.

The next saying
of our Lord’s which would cause controversy is found in verse 9 where He says, I
am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out
and find pasture.

Not only does
Jesus claim to be the door to those accepted by God, but here He also claims to
be the door to salvation, which means He is the door to forgiveness, mercy,
grace and the like. And so what a declaration, if Jesus was interested in being
popular or in building a mega church then this is certainly not the way to go
about doing it, the only thing certain is that He would create division with
such strong and offensive language; and to be sure that is what He intended.
The only way anyone would be saved is supernaturally and so He went out of His
way to insult every human sense of worth. He did this in order that there would
be no false convert. The reason that there is so many false converts today is
because they are hearing a watered down gospel which does not offend the human
senses and so many don’t have the sense to reject what they are hearing. Just
think about it, how many false converts did Jesus have at the end of His
ministry, the answer just one, Judas Iscariot and He made sure to trim that
branch off into the fire before He went to the cross.

That takes us to
verse 10 in which we the next of Christ’s divisive statements, there He
says, The
thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come
that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.

And so not only
does He claim to be the door to acceptance with God, and the door to salvation,
but now He claims to be the door to eternal life. Not only is Jesus the door
but He is the key that unlocks the door and he is the door handle that opens
the door; He is an all sufficient door to the sheep of God; there is no other
savior, there is no other God; He is the all sufficient shepherd of God.

And so onto verse
11 where Jesus says,
I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep.
11 where Jesus says,
I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep.
Here Christ
contrasts Himself with all others, exposing there greed and self-centeredness;
in comparison He was and always is giving of Himself, revealing His
selflessness ; that is the divine character of Christ, even dying on the cross
for those not worthy of an ounce of
God’s grace. Verse 12 speaks of the carelessness and selfishness of man,
looking out for his own interests and not the interests of other, so unlike
Christ; while the bible tells us to resist the devil and he will flee, in verse
13 we see these false and fraudulent shepherds doing the fleeing. And so Jesus
exposes those who spread fallacy, heresy and error as cowards, quitters and
deserters; for that is exactly what they turned into at the first sign of
trouble; while Christ on the other hand stands His ground and commands all
adversity as He wills.

Verse 14 is also
very divisive, Jesus says,
I am the good shepherd; and I know My sheep, and am known by My own.
very divisive, Jesus says,
I am the good shepherd; and I know My sheep, and am known by My own.
These words at
first glance are seemingly harmless enough, but when one takes a second look
they will find that the Lord intended to offend His listeners. The offense is
found at the tail end of the verse, and
am known by my own. For those who know Christ this provides assurance
but for those who don’t they feel discriminated against; to say that if I
don’t’ know Christ then I have no hope of eternal life, no opportunity to
experience forgiveness from God, no entrance into heaven. And so you bet there
was division among the Jews. There is no greater pleasure to know and be known
by God; and there is no greater discomfort and uneasiness of soul than to be
without Christ, without God and without hope for all of eternity. And so it is
obvious that two such groups would naturally be divided on their world views, how
they see religion, how they see politics, and how they see themselves. One has
a heavenly perspective while the other a worldly point of view.

Verses 15-16
provide more offence to the human senses in that Jesus said,
provide more offence to the human senses in that Jesus said,
15 As
the Father knows Me, even so I know the Father; and I lay down My life for the
sheep.
the Father knows Me, even so I know the Father; and I lay down My life for the
sheep.
16 And
other sheep I have which are not of this fold; them also I must bring, and they

Jesus says one
flock and one shepherd not many flocks and many shepherds, no this is an
exclusive community of believers, He leaves no room for a diversity of ideas
and beliefs. No there is but one faith and one Christ; anyone who finds themselves
out side of the teachings of Christ ; anyone who follows after someone
alongside of or apart from Christ will find themselves in outer darkness where
there is weeping and gnashing of teeth outside of the presence of a Holy God; this was bad news for the
religious leaders of that day, because there services were no longer needed, if
they wanted to enter the kingdom they would have to become followers of Christ,
they would have to leave the old religion of Judaism no longer profiting from
their position of authority. No longer defrauding innocent people with their
heavy handed false preaching. This is equally divisive today many say that
Christianity is bigoted, narrow minded and intolerant. Bigoted? No; narrow
minded? Yes; intolerant yes! Jesus is no bigot, He created all of the human
race and is not a respecter of persons; there is no Jew nor Gentile; no slave
nor free; no male or female; but all one in Christ Jesus. Is Jesus narrow
minded? You bet; He is the truth, the way and the life; no one come to Him but
by the father; no one comes to the Father but through Him; there is a narrow
way that leads to life and few find it; He says thou shall and though shall
not; and so narrow minded you bet! Is Jesus intolerant, you better believe it!
He does not tolerate sin, He does not tolerate unbelief, He does not tolerate
idolatry; He does not tolerate evil and Godlessness.

And so Jesus
draws a line in the sand and on one side of that line you have the offended,
the insulted those who are outraged at His word; they are the goats and the
chaff and they are the many. And on the others on the opposite side of the line
are those who embrace His insults and rejoice accepting them as truth, they
love His word and they abide in His sayings; they are the sheep and the wheat;

The final
divisive statement is made by Jesus in verses 17-18 where Jesus claimed that
God was His Father, which meant that He himself was claiming to be equal with
God; and not only that, but He would prove His claim by dying and resurrecting
Himself from the dead which only God could do. he also said that all of this He
would accomplish in obedience to the Father’s will. Everything that Jesus said
and did was in the perfect will of His Father; always has been, always will be.

And so that
brings us full circle to verse 19 where it says:
Therefore there was a division again among the Jews because of these sayings.

Division that was
Jesus’ purpose for doing everything He did and saying everything He said. He
wanted no false converts proclaiming His name; and so He did everything
possible to discourage people from believing; He did not promote the easy
believism or carnal Christianity that is so prevalent and running rampant in
today’s church. He said things like, if you want to follow Me it may cost you
your very life, He said that one’s love for Him must be so great that in
comparison it will seem as though they hate their natural family members.

John 10:19 is not
the first time in the gospel of John in which Jesus brought about division. In
John 9:16 He brought about division by healing the blind man on the Sabbath;
and so there it was what He did and when He did it that caused the division and
no what He said; Of all days to heal the man why the Sabbath? The answer is
because He purposefully went out to offend and divide, making it difficult to
believe in Him. In John 7:43 there it says, so
there was a division among the people because of Him. And john 6:52 says that, The
Jews therefore quarreled among themselves.

and so in john
10:19 we see a division among the Jews for not just the things He claimed of
Himself, claiming to be the good God but also for what He revealed natural man
as mainly thieves and robbers who seek to kill and destroy while He Himself was
seeking to save that which was lost, He was seeking to give His life as a
ransom for many; And so what a contrast between God and man.

That brings us to
verses 20-21 in which we conclude the message for tonight; it is there that we
find conflict among the Jews, the division among the crowd; there were two
competing views among the people:
And many of them said, "He has a demon and is mad. Why do you listen to
Him?" Others said, "These are not the words of one who has a demon.
Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?"

There were some
among the crowd and dare I say many that were of the opinion that Jesus was
demon possessed and therefore insane to say the things that He was saying. This
speaks to the strong statements that our Lord was putting forth. For if He was not God they would have been right
to assume that He must be delusional and therefore lost all capabilities for
reasoning within the confines of the real world here on earth.

But it was these
unbelieving Jews whose mind had been corrupted by sin and so they were the ones
who were unreasonable. Sin confines the human mind to thinking within the
boundaries of this world, it will not allow for thinking that allows for belief
beyond what it can see. And so the second group argued from reason saying, just
listen to Him He is brilliant, can these possibly be the words of one possessed
by a demon? Just look at what He has done for the man that was born blind in
chapter 9, could a demon do that; and if it is possible that they could, it is
doubtful that they would.

And so that is
the two camps, that is the division among the Jews; and as it is today there is
the believing and the unbelieving; there are the reasonable and the

to believe and those who don’t ; there are those who understand what it means
